Ok, so this is going to be different than a lot of blog posts in the fact that I'll be rambling on and this post will be pretty long (could this count as two blog posts? Eh, probably not), so if you are reading this, just bear with me.
I'd like to start this blog post with the feeling that the seniors had after they lost. There was silence all throughout the bleachers and all around the gym, there was an air of, did that shit just happen? Everyone was in shock that the seniors had lost, from the freshies, to the sophomores, to the juniors, and most obviously, the seniors themselves.Yet, after thinking it over and talking with friends about what had happened, could it have been a good thing that the seniors lost the bucket?
Now I know, I should stoned for the blasphemy that I've uttered against the seniors. I can hear the counter-arguments now, we deserved the bucket, the seniors win it every year, and It's tradition! Yes, I know, and yes, it pisses me off too that this was the year that we lost, but at the same time, if we want actual change and for people to show more spirit during spirit week and field day, it was about time that the seniors lost.
So I'll answer the claims one by one, and offer my own arguments, hell, I'll treat this issue like a debate (and hopefully don't bore you by the end). First of all, with deserving the bucket, did we really deserve it? When you looked on the senior bleachers, not everyone was as spirited as they were supposed to be, people were tired, blankly watching, some playing games on their phones, while others were watching videos. The seniors are supposed to be the role models, and instead of showing support, cheering, ect, they are sitting on their asses, because they believed that the bucket was going to them inevitably, so why work? So, no, we didn't deserve it, because we didn't take the effort to win the bucket, we didn't show our support, and most importantly of all, as seniors, we weren't good role models to the rest of the grades looking up to us.
Next, I'll address the claim of the seniors win it every year and tradition in the same paragraph since they're so closely related.. Great, the seniors win it every year, and yeah, it's tradition, but is tradition always good? Is it really ok to say that letting the seniors win every year is ok when the seniors don't do shit for the bucket because they think that they're going to win it no matter what. When you think about it, why do the seniors have to win every year? What practical reason has their been for the seniors to win? Because the seniors might act out? If we have to appease the seniors with, a bucket in order for them not to key cars, slash tires, not come to school, and act immaturely, then they sure as hell won't win because that behavior doesn't teach them anything. The school is essentially saying, "here's the bucket, don't hurt us." This is not behavior that we as seniors should be labeled with. Because of this label and the seniors winning EVERY year, claims were made of field day being rigged for the seniors. If the seniors want to win the bucket, they should win it without having to wade through claims of field day being rigged.
Finally, now that the seniors have lost, all the grades believe that they have a chance. Everyone has seen the seniors been unseated from their throne of bucket-winners, and believe that they have an equal chance to win the bucket. This will now mean that each grade will now try harder to win the bucket. The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will try harder because they believe that they now have a chance to win the bucket because it isn't "rigged" anymore, and the seniors will try harder because they now know that they have a chance to be unseated and they have to sustain their role of "top dog" in the school. Because the seniors have been unseated, all the grades will work harder towards the bucket, show more school spirit, and there will be more energy within the gym.
(Also, people it's a bucket, if you care about the bucket that much, go to the store and buy one...)
"THATS SO INTERESTING!" -I literally just yelled that in my head. Your point that if we actually want poeple to participate and have the feeling of real competition, it was time to reveal that spirit week is indeed not rigged! I was not present for the competition for the bucket so I have no personal grudges against the juniors winning but i believe you just gave meaning to our legendary loss. We now have given at least the next 3 years at groves a craving to win the bucket earlier than senior year.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with this Us Seniors could have tried way harder and been more spirited we thought that we automatically win the bucket but that didn't happen. So everyone was upset but i said the exact same thing when we lost it was just a horrible. At first i really didn't see the point of the bucket but now i see the importance of it.. and its sad that we lost it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that seniors should of tried way harder to win the bucket. I believe seniors didn't take it seriously because they thought were older and were guaranteed to win since every other year did. I didn't really get the purpose of winning a bucket until this year being a senior and losing. I cant blame some students for what they did even though it was uncalled for. Seniors just have to take that shame of loosing and move forward not holding a grudge against juniors.
