Salad Bowl or Melting Pot?

One of the many racial debates is whether America should be considered and ethnic and racial melting pot- all mixing together or a salad bowl- in the same bowl but still easily definable? National Geographic has used photoshop to estimate what the average American will look like in the year 2050. These faces will only come to be if America is indeed a melting pot. Hopefully some of us will still be around (I will be age 53) to see whether this guestimate is true! I understand that it used to be socially unacceptable to socialize, let alone marry, a person from a different race but I think as the years have gone on that it has become much more socially acceptable to marry and be a mixed couple. I think in particular our generation is going to be the generation that has no problems with it. I could be generalizing, but I believe that our generation believes that love is love, no matter what race, or gender.

  2. I agree. I think the difference between us and our parents is that our generation is more accepting of different cultures. While yes, you do have kids who are bigoted, they usually get it from their parents, and even then, some kids are horrified at the racism/sexism/homophobia, their parents might say. So I have to agree that our generation is better handled on these things.

  3. I agree that our generation is more accepting that other generations. We are more diverse and are around more of different cultures and races. I think that the people that are not accepting of races are influenced by what the generations before them say about a race and believe it. I believe the next generation will be more accepting than our generation making a generation of people like the photos in the link.
